As we are all going to be at home for some considerable time to come I thought now might be a good time for a post about how to clean your leather bags. I don’t know about you but I’m running out of the ‘big cleaning jobs’ that I never normal have time for, so I am turning my attention to the smaller (but by no means less important!) things -the handbag collection…
Good quality leather handbags are not small investments and so deserve to be properly cared for. We often have customers come into the shop who have had their leather bags for upwards of 10 year and they look better than ever because they have been loved and nurtured.
Prevention is the key…Start with a good quality leather protector, we use cobblers cream for the bags in the shop. If you work the cobblers cream into the bag with a soft cloth in a circular motion it will nourish the leather, work out any small marks, like scuffs from your fingernails, and will provide a layer of protection repelling water and oils. It is best to do this before you take your bag out for the first time and then repeat regularly, once a month should be fine, to ensure the layer of protection is topped up. But if you haven’t done that from the start there is no better time than now to begin. Any leather protecting cream you use should be tested on a small inconspicuous area first.
There are a couple of other things you can do to protect your handbag from the beginning - keep make up in a make up or zip-lock bag and make sure you always secure pen lids before dropping them into your bag - make up and ink are the 2 most common mishaps we see with handbags.
These tips should keep your handbags in good condition from the start but ‘deep cleaning’ your bag every 3 months if you use it every day or every 6 months if it is a special occasion bag will do it the world of good too.
We recommend getting a good quality leather care kit, The Handbag Clinic have kits on Amazon that contain everything you need.
Start by completely emptying the bag and shake out any debris, I have been known to hoover the inside of my bags! Then massage the cleaning solution into the inside and outside of the bag. Leave it to dry before applying the protection cream with a soft cloth. Take care to really focus on the areas of the bag that are more prone to damage or used a lot - the handles, around the zipper or fastening and the corners. Lighter coloured leathers that are easily stained might need this process repeated a couple of times. Don’t try to clean your leather bags with baby wipes, vinegar, lemon juice or any other DIY remedies, they are likely to discolour the leather and make any stains worse.
Happy Cleaning!
